New Riga Theatre

Several theatres have operated in the well-known building at Lāčplēša Street 25 – the first was the New Latvian Theatre, whose most notable event was the staging of Aspazija’s “Sidraba šķidrauts” in 1905. From 1908 to 1915 a contemporary theatre fully in line with the European theatre trends of the time operated there – the New Riga Theatre, which also focused on the plays of Blaumanis, Aspazija and Rainis. In 1920 the Daile Theatre began its life there and continued until 1979, after which the building on Lāčplēša Street was home to the Latvian troupe of the Youth Theatre until 1992. And now the New Riga Theatre lives and works there again, currently awaiting its return to Lāčplēša Street after the building’s reconstruction.
